Lady Tigers start season on winning note

Bradwell’s softball season started just 10 days ago, but the Lady Tigers already are seven games in and sporting a 4-3 overall record and 1-1 region mark.
On Tuesday, the Lady Tigers earned their first Region 3B-AAAAA win of the season by beating Windsor Forest, 10-2, in five innings at Paulson Field in Savannah.
According to Lady Tiger coach Sharyl Eastlake, the girls scored runs in all five innings.
Freshman pitcher MacKenize Stewart got the win in her first region game. She pitched 3 2/3 innings allowed two hits, struck out five and gave up one earned run. Junior Kasey Smith pitched the last 1 1/3 innings, striking out two and allowing no hits.
Leading Bradwell at the plate were Sarah Wells with two singles, a double and two RBIs; Stewart with two singles and two RBIs; Marissa Polston with two singles and one RBI; and Courtney Felton with a triple and two RBIs.
So far this season, Stewart has seven hits in nine at-bats for a .778 average to go with six RBIs. Jessica Puckett is 6-for-9 at the plate for a .667 average with seven runs and three RBIs.
The Lady Tigers’ toughest challenge was to take place late Thursday afternoon, when they were seeking their first road win against Jenkins High. Results were unavailable at press time.
Starting today, Bradwell will be at Mills Creek Park in Statesboro for the Battle in the ’Boro Tournament. The Lady Tigers play Savannah Christian at 5 p.m. and Statesboro at 8 p.m.
On Saturday morning, the Lady Tigers play Screven County to finish pool play and start bracket play shortly after.
