Bradwell’s runner and jumpers have been out on the practice field as the track teams prepare for their first meet at 4 p.m. this Thursday at home.
Statesboro High and McIntosh County Academy will visit the Tigers home track to compete against the boys and girls. The challenge this year will be getting the new athletes in shape and ready to compete, as both the girls and boys have a lot of new members.
“I’m looking for the girls to exceed in all events,” girls track coach Readie Kelly said. “We are young in every event this year. “I’m getting ready to train some girls that have never high jumped, trooper jumped or long jumped before, so I’m in the process of training them in these events.”
Her message to the young athletes is that only regions matter.
“That is the time when I want them to be able to peak at that point.”
Although the boys have a few more returning competitors they face the same challenge.
“We are hoping that we can blend the old with the new,” coach Emmett Watkins said. “We have some boys returning this years that did qualify in state last year like, Darrell Webb, Richard Hobbs, and Vontavious Pennyman,” he said.
