Bicyclist discusses trip

Bicyclist Palmer Dasher gave a presentation during the Goldenheirs meeting Aug. 7 at in Hinesville.

Dasher went on the Greenway Sojourn trip June 17-24 from Washington, D.C., to Pittsburgh. The route followed the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and the Great Allegheny Passage and covered 350 miles. The event drew 341 riders. The riders passed many historical points. Dasher said a notable visit was to Antietam National Cemetery in Maryland, where almost 18,500 soldiers were wounded in battle Sept. 17, 1862. Another highlight of the trip was the C&O Canal, which has 11 aqueducts, 74 locks, and seven dams.

Also at the meeting, new officers were installed. George Laseter was installed as president, with Jane Cart installed as vice president. Other officers installed were: John Stetzer as secretary/treasurer, Ralph Dixon as program chairman, Peggy Wells as set-up chairwoman, and Joyce Laseter as publicity.

Goldenheirs is a senior group that meets at noon the first Tuesday of each month at First Baptist Church.
