After dismantling Lanier County last week, the Blue Tide were brought back down to reality Friday as they fell 39-0 to Benedictine Military School in Savannah.
The two teams appeared to be evenly matched early in the game, but the Blue Tied had four turnovers, costly penalties and several mistakes in the defensive secondary.
In the first quarter, BC tailback back Mike Huggins scored on a 14-yard run.  After kicker John Solitario missed the extra point, the Cadets led, 6-0.
Early in the second period, Benedictine’s John Gaines scored from 27 yards out for a 12-0 lead. After a deep kick the Blue Tide took over on offense at their 20-yard line.  Quarterback Jacob Turner hit wide receiver Shawn Mills for a long gain, but Mills fumbled, and a BC defender recovered the ball at midfield.  Shortly after, Cadet quarterback Miles McGinty hit receiver Brad Stewart with a 31-yard touchdown pass.
The Blue Tide got the ball back at their 21 with 3:55 left in the half, but lightning delayed the game for more than an hour.
When the game resumed, Long County’s offense still couldn’t do anything as the Tide was forced to punt.  BC took advantage of the opportunity and put up another score to take a 25-0 lead going into a shortened halftime break.
In the third quarter, McGinty hit Stewart again, this time for a
29-yard score to put Benedictine on top, 32-0.
After the kickoff, the Blue Tide had the ball deep in their own territory.  Jaleel Braggs made some nifty runs, and Deonte Ellis made a big reception as Long County drove to the Cadets 16.  The Tide pounded the ball to the 2, and then called on running back Fred Nelson. Nelson pounded it up the middle and appeared to score but fumbled the ball. The Cadets recovered the ball in the end-zone to take possession.  BC drove down the field for the final score.
With the turnovers in the game, the defense was on the field for much of the night. T.J. Sims, Armando Toledo, Nick Stock and Deandre Reddick all had big tackles. Long County’s Jeffery Hall received the trophy and selected as the Overtime Sports Bar and Grill defensive player of the game. McGinty was chosen as the offensive player of the game.
With the loss, the Blue Tide fell to 1-1, while Benedictine improved to 2-0.  Long County has another tough game this Friday with powerhouse Vidalia High School (2-0) coming to Ludowici.
