With excited fans and anxious parents, First Presbyterian Christian Academy was set to enter the second round of play against Westwood.
The students, teachers and supporters walked into East Georgia College with posters and cheers to support the team. FPCA Varsity Boys hit the court Saturday only to make history for their school. The roar of the crowd energized the players into the final four. FPCA took the win over Westwood with a score of 60-43.
“Our first Varsity Boys Basketball team is now headed to the Final Four of the state playoffs which is a remarkable accomplishment for these young men,” said Headmaster Reggie Burgess. “They are enjoying the hard works of their labor,” said Burgess.
Coach West could not control the excitement that he felt over the win. “We are in the Final Four,” he said, “and these young men deserve it.” He told his players all they need to do is continue to believe in them selves and put God first and anything is possible. The little engine that could did what they set out to do at the beginning of the season.
“This is truly a milestone for First Presbyterian Christian Academy,” said fan Ernie Walthour, who was on hand to cheer them on to victory. “These young men are developing daily and we truly admire their hard work and the discipline that they have shown in order to get to this point.
“To have made it to the Final Four out of 16 teams is something they need to be proud of.”
The high scorer of the game was freshmen Michael Brown with 21 points followed by sophomore Joey Bell with 15 points. The other Highlander scores came from sophomore Terrence T.A. Alston II with 13 points, Joshua Rodgers with 7 and Hakeem Golden with 4 and numerous rebounds.
The Highlanders head to Milledgeville to compete in the Final Four of the GISA state playoffs on Friday.
