Conference focuses on veterans’ mental health

STATESBORO — Magnolia Coastlands Area Health Education Center will host a free conference, “Serving Those Who Have Served: Educating Community Healthcare Providers Working With Service Members, Veterans and Their Families,” from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.

The event is aimed at civilian medical and behavioral-health providers and social workers. Topics will include: the importance of knowing military culture in providing treatment for veterans and their families; understanding clinical guidelines and treatment plans; and an overview of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

A welcome and introduction will be given by state Sen. Jack Hill. The primary speaker will be Dr. Amy Stevens, a clinical counseling and education consultant doing business at Arcadian Resources in Marietta. She has more than 25 years of experience in counseling, education and training with military, government, public and private agencies.
