Fall means full slate of events

POSTED: September 23, 2012 7:00 a.m.

After such a rainy end to summer, I am looking forward to fall. Cooler weather, college football and, of course, the delicious “winter foods” that will become staples in my diet as I “hibernate.”

Fall also brings time with family, weddings and, who could forget, all the festivals.

Liberty County will have its fair share of outdoor gatherings that celebrate food and culture.

To begin, Blues and BBQ will be 4-11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29. This free family event features three talented musical acts and some of the best barbecue in the area.

There also will be a sweet-tea tasting competition. Tell your favorite restaurants and caterers to enter soon!

On Friday, Oct. 26, be sure to visit the Hinesville Downtown Development Authority’s Scarecrow Stroll and Beggars Night. This fun (and free!) evening draws thousands of people to the downtown area for trick-or-treating, games, storytelling, an outdoor movie and more.

November will be the busiest month by far! On Saturday, Nov. 3, there are several fun events, including the YMCA Fall Festival, which features free games, food, crafts and more. First Presbyterian Christian Academy also will host its annual chili cook-off, which brings out some of the best chili makers in the area.

The following Saturday, Nov. 10, head out to Riceboro to experience Ricefest. A parade begins at 9 a.m., followed by a full day of performances by talented artists, a rice cook-off and much more. The evening before will feature a homecoming, which showcases several celebrity guests, a beauty pageant and step showdown.

On Saturday, Nov. 24, Geechee Kunda will host its annual Sugarcane Harvest and Art Show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Attendees can watch sugarcane harvested from start to finish, learn about the Gullah Geechee culture and view many different mediums of artwork.
The Liberty Convention and Visitors Bureau also will have its hand in planning Christmas events — a full week of fun, family friendly activities for everyone to enjoy.

If you would like to be a part of the Christmas committee, please call the CVB at 368-3580.

As always, we hope to see you supporting our community events!
