Stores report good holiday sales

POSTED: January 15, 2008 5:02 a.m.
For those wanting to get a head start on Christmas 2008, the days after Christmas have proven to be the time to get the best deals.
In a close running with Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, sales for the day after Christmas brought out the crowds.
Bob Guyer, manager of Big Lots said there was “good traffic early this morning (Dec. 26),” with returns being “very light.”
Denise Mako, manager of Beall’s outlet, said the day after Thanksgiving was “definitely busier,” but noted “holiday shopping was great. We had a good turnout.”
Maxine Clark, manager of Peebles department store, said “The shoppers really came out.
“More people knew about the store and visited the store and shopped more around the Christmas season,” she said.
Clark reported having customers from as far away as Glennville and Brunswick visit the store.
Wally Davidson, Wal-Mart store manager said Christmas sales were “flat to a little down” in comparison to the day after Thanksgiving, with it being “busier the last week or two before the holiday, as far as the crowds.”
Electronics such as the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, high definition TVs and computers, were the major sellers and “what was driving the business,” according to Davidson.
Peebles’ most popular items were perfume and men’s and women’s cologne.
All the stores reported clearances on Christmas merchandise and apparel until everything is gone and are planning continued specials.
