The Long County High School football team Friday picked up its first Region 2-AA win in almost four years when it manhandled Atkinson County, 47-6, in Pearson.
Blue Tide tailback Josh Berry led the way on offense with three touchdowns.
The Tide’s previous region win was Oct. 31, 2008, when they beat Brantley County.
LCHS athletic director Karen Swindell said the win was sweet and was a result the players’ and coaches’ hard work.
“It is a great win for the football program, and it is an exciting time for our players; hats off to our coaching staff and players for an awesome game plan,” Swindell said. “The football team is buying in to Coach Flott’s program, and they are working hard to become the winners we all know they are.”
According to Swindell, a reason the team was successful Friday — and has been so far this season — is the hard work the players put in during the offseason. She also believes this year will be the best season ever for the Blue Tide football program.
“They are reaping the benefits of their hard work, determination and dedication,” Swindell said. “I look for this season to be the best one in school history, and we are looking to pick up a few more region wins.”
With the win, the Blue Tide improved their overall record to 2-2 and their region mark to 1-2.
The 2-AA standings as of Tuesday had Vidalia High School (4-0 overall) and Bacon County (3-1) on top with 3-0 region records; Benedictine Military School (3-1), Toombs County (3-1) and McIntosh County (2-2) were behind them at 2-1; while Long County (2-2), Jeff Davis (2-2) and Bryan County (1-3) all were at 1-2. Atkinson County (0-4) and Metter High School (0-4) were 0-3.
On Friday, the Blue Tide are at home for a region game with Bryan County.
A preview will be in Friday’s Coastal Courier.
