Liberty Elementary teacher on administrative leave

Teacher reportedly tipped student's desk

POSTED: September 26, 2012 3:27 p.m.

A Liberty Elementary School second-grade teacher is on paid administrative leave for a classroom incident where she reportedly tipped a student’s desk over and spilled its contents on the floor.

The incident occurred Sept. 21, and two parents reported it to administrators on Monday, according to Liberty County School System Superintendent Dr. Judy Scherer.

The teacher, whose name has not been released, reportedly became angry when a student could not find a class assignment and tipped the student’s desk.

The student has minor bruises that could be related to the incident, Scherer said.

The educator admitted to getting angry, and Scherer said the incident was not an accident but was “intimidating and not very appropriate.”

Scherer said the incident was reported to the Midway Police Department, the Division of Family and Children Services and the state Professional Standards Commission, which oversees teacher licenses.

District officials also are looking into the matter, which includes student interviews and speaking with the teacher, who has more than 25 years of classroom experience. District officials likely will conclude the investigation this week, and the teacher may face suspension without pay.
