HPD blotter

POSTED: September 29, 2012 7:00 a.m.

Sept. 8: Theft by shoplifting — An officer was dispatched to Dollar General after an employee reported a man took a package of diapers without paying and drove off in a black SUV. The employee wrote down the vehicle’s tag number. The officer asked dispatch to run the tag, and it came back registered to a Long County address. A Long County deputy was sent to the home, but the SUV was not there. The officer obtained the vehicle owner’s phone number, but it was disconnected. The officer then learned the vehicle owner had another registered address, so he went to that house. A man came to the door, but said he did not own a black SUV and denied taking the diapers. He agreed to come to the store to prove he was not the suspect. A store employee said the man was not the same person who took the diapers.

After finishing his shift, the responding officer learned another man had contacted the police in an attempt to resolve the matter. The man who called police identified himself as the person who had taken the diapers. The Dollar General employee said that if the diapers were paid for by the time she got off work, she would not pursue criminal charges against the man.

The officer later called the store employee to follow up and was told the diapers had been paid for and the employee no longer wished to pursue the matter.
