The 3rd Infantry Division lost another soldier Monday, the result of a non-combat related ailment, the Department of Defense said Wednesday.
Sgt. Reno S. Lacerna, 44, died Dec. 31 in Al Qayyarah, Iraq after suffering from an illness the military has yet to identify. His death is currently under investigation.
Lacerna, a native of Waipahu, Hawaii, was assigned to the 3rd ID’s 87th Corps Support Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Brigade and worked as a chemical equipment repair specialist. He joined the Army in Jan. 1997 and arrived at Fort Stewart in Dec. 2006.
According to a Jan. 2 DoD casualty report, 3,902 soldiers have now died in Iraq, including 724 non-hostile deaths.
An independent website tracking the number of troop deaths in Iraq, icasualties.org, placed the number of casualties at 3,904 as of Jan. 3.
