The Blue Tide have a chance for a winning season.

At this time last year, the Long County High School football team sat at 0-6 and was just looking to get through the season.
However, with six games under their belt in 2012, the Blue Tide are 3-3 overall and 2-3 in Region 2-AA.  With four games remaining, they have a chance of making the playoffs and having their first non-losing season — or even their first winning season. Long County is two wins away from the best season in the program’s short history.
“Our goal at the beginning of the year was to make the playoffs, and that is still our goal now,” Blue Tide head coach Ron Flott said. “We still have a shot, and we’re going to continue to play smash-mouth football every week.”
Two of the Tide’s three losses were to strong teams in Vidalia (6-0) and Benedictine Military School (5-1), which they simply did not match up with.  But in their three wins against Lanier County (2-4), Atkinson County (0-6), and Bryan County (1-5) and even in their loss last week against Bacon County (4-2), the Tide matched up well.
Over the last half of the season, the Tide have two teams that appear to match up evenly with them and two teams that appear to have an advantage.  The two teams that they should match up well against are Jeff Davis (2-4) and Metter High School (1-5). However, Toombs County (4-2), which the Tide play next week, and McIntosh County (4-2) look like tough games for Long County.  If the Tide are going to make the playoffs and possibly have their first winning season, they will have to defeat one of those two latter teams and also win the games against Jeff Davis and Metter.
Long County is off this week, but will have its opportunity next Friday to see if it can get by Toombs County, which will be hosting its homecoming game in Lyons.
