First Presbyterian Christian Academy wants football fans to wear blue tonight when the Highlanders take on Frederica Academy (4-2) in a homecoming matchup at Long Bell Stadium.
First Presbyterian and the St. Simons Island private school have developed a friendly rivalry in other Georgia Independent School Association sports and that could carry over to the football field.
FPCA coach Andy Yanzetich said the Knights’ second-year football team commands attention and his team needs to stay focused after coming off a bye week.
The winless Highlanders (0-5) used the extra practice time to get ready for the Knights’ triple option offense, Yanzetich said.
“We worked on knowing our assignments,” he said. “Frederica is a very disciplined team, kind of like St. Andrews. They will run the same thing until we blow an assignment or start cheating with our tendencies.”
Yanzetich said his offense needs to be more physical and his receivers and running backs need to run precise routes if the Highlanders are to win.
“They are well-coached and will be in certain places at all times,” he said. “We have to commit to the run game; that helps with our passing game. If we can stay focused on playing sound football and not get caught up in the rivalry stuff we should compete to very end. That’s all I want my guys to do — fight each game, quarter and play.”
This is the first year FPCA has fielded a football team.
