Smiley Elementary School’s Media Center hosted a western Christmas celebration Accelerated Reading party Dec. 19 to promote its AR program and reward students who had scored 80 or better on their tests.
“This party is a reward for those kids who have an 80 percent average on their AR tests, and who meet their grade level requirements,” Media Specialist Pam McDonald said.
According to McDonald, the AR Program promotes reading. As students complete reading their books, they then take a test on the book and receive so many points for completing it.
First through third grades at Smiley Elementary School take part in the effort.
“All the kids are in the AR Program, but this party was a reward for those who have went above the average,” McDonald said.
Some of the activities at the party included face painting, a trim the tree relay race, Christmas cookie decorations, a wagon train ride and a visit with Santa Claus.
“Today’s party is part of the students’ reward, but they also will be going to a rodeo at the NC Ranch in April as the final part of their reward,” McDonald said.
There were 24 students from the first grade, 60 from second grade and 60 from the third grade who made the cut and were able to attend the party.
