The Long County High School football team hit several new marks Friday in its 48-0 win over Jeff Davis High School in Hazlehurst.
The Blue Tide notched their first shutout, put up the most points in one half (35), had their largest margin of victory (48) and recorded their third Region 2-AA win, which is the most in program history. They also claimed their fourth overall win, which is the program’s highest single-season victory total since 2008.
“The whole team played an outstanding game,” Long County coach Ron Flott said. “Earlier in the week, we told them to focus on their individual job between the snap and the whistle. Nothing else matters … don’t worry about anybody else, don’t worry about the score, just focus on your job, and then at the end of the game, we’ll see where we are.”
Though Flott was happy with his entire team, he also was pleased with some individual efforts. He said that everyone on defense played well, but singled out the effort of Jeffery Hall.
“Jeffery had a heck of a game. He made a bunch of tackles, had a couple of sacks, and he caused a fumble and then recovered the fumble. He just played really well,” Flott said.
Flott said that the offensive line, the running backs and the wide receivers all blocked well. He also praised the play of Josh Berry, who had three touchdowns.
“Josh ran for a lot of yards, and several scores, but a lot of people played well on the offense too,” Flott said. “Vanda (Vareen) played on both sides of the ball and also had good game.”
The Blue Tide improved their overall record to 4-4 and their region record to 3-4. With two games left, the Tide still has a chance for their first winning season. If that is going to happen, they will have to get by a tough McIntosh County team Friday in Ludowici. See Friday’s Coastal Courier for a game preview.
