The Liberty County Board of Education last week bid farewell to a member of their team who’s logged more time than many of the sitting board members.

The group, along with Superintendent Dr. Judy Scherer, wished 32-year employee Gwen Stewart well during Stewart’s final meeting as she heads into retirement.

“She’s a wealth of information, and she very quietly and very efficiently goes about doing her work every single day, … it’s get the job done, do it well, do it with grace, do it with love, and support each and every one of us,” Scherer said, adding Stewart “has worked her way up through the ranks because of her loyal dedication and service and her work ethic.”

Stewart, whose final day is Nov. 30, has served as the executive secretary to the superintendent and school board for about 18 years.

Stewart was bashful during the recognition and drew several rounds of laughter as she repeatedly asked if she could return to her seat.

“Gwen, I just want to say that you’ve done more for us than you’ll ever know,” board member Marcia Anderson said. “Thank you for what you’ve done for us; thank you for taking care of the kids in Liberty County; thank you for all you’ve done with all the employees here.”

Board members Charlie J. Frasier, Harold Woods and Verdell Jones each thanked Stewart for her service but added they were glad to know her in other arenas of life and will remain in contact. Board Chairwoman Lily Baker and members Carol Guyett and Becky Carter also spoke fondly of Stewart and wished her well.
