The Long County High School boys’ basketball team fell to Wayne County, 73-67, on Saturday in Jesup.
The Blue Tide came out on fire and took an early 23-14 lead over the Yellow Jackets. However, in the second period, Wayne County fought back, outscoring the Blue Tide 18-11, but at the half Long County still held a slim lead, 34-32.
In the third period, the Blue Tide continued their slump, and the Yellow Jackets continued their surge as Wayne County led, 49-46, at the start of the fourth quarter.  The Yellow Jackets kept the momentum going in the final period on their way to the win.
“We played well in the first quarter and had somewhat of a letdown the rest of the game,” Blue Tide head coach Deshone Brock said. “Some of it was due to our foul situation. A lot of our starters got into foul trouble, and we never really got back in the swing of the game.”
Jamaal Anderson led Long County with 22 points and nine rebounds. Josh Berry and Vanda Vareen each had nine points, with Vareen also pulling down four rebounds.  Chris LaRochester added six points, five blocked shots and four rebounds.
The loss dropped Long County’s record to 0-2. The Blue Tide will be back on the hard court Tuesday when they take on the Benedictine Cadets in Ludowici. Also Tuesday, the Lady Tide face St. Vincent’s Academy. The girls’ game starts at 6 p.m., with the boys’ game to follow.
