It’s terrible when you forget a friend’s birthday. That feeling of guilt that comes upon you when you realize that a special day came and went without being recognized. We get so caught up in our mundane existence, so busy in our day-to-day activity that sometimes we all miss a special day.
Feb. 5, 2007 came and went, without a thought to most of us. I don’t think we, as residents, realized the significance of that day. It was on Feb. 5, 1777 that Liberty County was incorporated making it the County’s 230th birthday.
Originally formed from the areas known as Saint John’s, Saint James and Saint Andrew’s Parish, it was the sixth original county to be formed in the state of Georgia.
From the picturesque scenery of the eastern shores of St. Catherine’s Island, the grand live oaks around the county, to the Historical Liberty Trail and Fort Stewart, Liberty County stands as a historical testament of Southern Heritage and pride.
Once inhabited by the Creek Indians, Liberty County was intensely involved in the Revolutionary War. It was in Liberty County that the first flag of independence was raised in Georgia. Because of this and the fact that Liberty County was the home of two of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence it is easy to see how the County derived its name.
The county continues to grow and thrive; new homes and commercial development are cropping up throughout the area.
It is understandable that with all the new development, both residential and industrial, we would forget the birthday of our county, but it is the beauty and historical value that we should all light a birthday candle for and make sure we never forget her spirit and growth in future years to come.
Happy Birthday Liberty County.
