Hampton Island Donates to Boy Scouts

POSTED: January 31, 2008 5:02 a.m.
On Jan. 8, Hampton Island Preserve developers donated $5 million to the Coastal Empire Council Boy Scouts of America. The donation followed Hampton Island's purchase of the Coastal Empire Council's Camp Blue Heron in Riceboro for $8 million. The 212-acre camp, just southeast of Riceboro, was originally given to the Coastal Empire Council in 1982 by the Union Camp Corporation. By combining the proceeds from the sale with the donation from the developers, the council will be able to acquire and construct a new, state-of-the-art camp. The new facility will allow the local Council to continue their mission of educating and developing the future leaders of America. Hampton Island managing member Ronald S. Leventhal said, "We are extremely honored to have the opportunity to invest in the Coastal Empire Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which has been and will continue to be instrumental in developing role models for future generations. Both Hampton Island and the Boy Scouts of America are committed to fostering generational bonds and a deep connection and appreciation for the environment while instilling integrity and independence into our youth. I look forward to being among those welcoming Coastal Empire Council Scouts to their new camp."  Coastal Empire Council Boy Scouts of America CEO Tom Cardiff called the sale and donation a milestone."Through the very hard work of the Coastal Empire Council Board and Hampton Island Preserve, young men and their families can be assured that continued, first-class outdoor training experiences will be provided to them in perpetuity. It is impossible to predict how many lives will be changed by what we do here today and the impact on our nation."He said the council will use the money to soon develop a new camp, though a location has not been decided."The Boy Scouts of America is grateful to Hampton Island Preserve for realizing that the development of America's youth, through the mentoring and leadership program provided by the Boy Scouts, will insure that tomorrow's leaders possess the moral and ethical fiber necessary to ensure our country's prosperity and safety."The Coastal Empire Council Boy Scouts of American has 8,000 members and 2,000 volunteers. Its office is at 11900 Abercorn Extension in Savannah.
