The Long County Board of Education recently adopted a resolution opposing Senate Bill HR 900 during its December meeting.
The bill, filed by House Speaker Glen Richardson (R-Hiram), would allow Georgia residents to vote on a constitutional amendment to reform the manner income taxes are collected in the state. It would change the current method of collecting revenue for the state and establish a flat tax.
Opponents of the bill contend it would be unfair to people on fixed incomes and lower income households. They also say it would take a majority of control away from local counties.
Supporters of the bill say it would do away with a complicated tax code, and make a simpler and fairer tax.
A copy of the resolution opposing the bill is on file at the Long BoE office and can be viewed by the public.

School news
School board members visited all local campuses Dec. 6.
"I want to commend each of the schools on the hospitality of their staffs and the cleanliness of each of the schools," board member Linda DeLoach said.
Deloach said she had received positive comments on the manner in which the high school accommodated students and teachers from Smiley Elementary School earlier in the month when the school had "electricity issues" and the power had gone out.
Special Education Director Donna Rosenbaum was presented with a certificate from the Georgia Department of Education recognizing "the excellence in education of students with disabilities."
The board approved new playground equipment to be added to one of the playgrounds at Smiley Elementary School and also approved continuing construction on the field house at Veteran's Stadium.
The board also accepted the resignation of Shawn Peek from his position as athletic director.
