Storms possible tonight, winds tomorrow

POSTED: December 20, 2012 9:53 a.m.

Thunderstorms, some possibly severe, could sweep across coastal Georgia late this afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service reports that a cold front is approaching from the west today and will push offshore tonight.

"The front will be accompanied by showers and thunderstorms, some of which could become strong or even severe with damaging wind gusts being the primary hazard," the advisory reads.

A similar front brought strong winds that knocked down tree and caused a few power outages Monday. It passed quickly, however.

Today's storm may not  pass as fast and will usher in cooler temperatures and gusty winds. The service has issued a wind advisory covering most of the state tonight through Friday.

The service's Charleston office said the advisory will be in effect from 6 p.m. through 7 p.m. Friday for a large swath of the state.

Winds in the region are expected to range from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts of up to 35 mph.
