In Wayne County, the family of Shaquille Elijah Morgan, 18, attended a quiet ceremony Monday in which several hundred white balloons were released in his honor.
Morgan, the son of Jesup police detective Perry Morgan, was killed after being struck by a train Saturday afternoon in Jesup. According to the Jesup Press-Sentinel, it appears Morgan was walking along the tracks near an overpass. The reports say Morgan was wearing headphones and did not notice the train until it was right upon him. The train’s engineer reported he activated the emergency brakes, blew the horn and did everything possible to get Morgan’s attention.
The engineer also reported that Morgan stumbled into the path of the train.
According to the Press-Sentinel, the senior scored more than 1,000 points in his high-school career and led the team in scoring in his final game Friday night against South Effingham. At Monday’s ceremony, many attendees wore bowties — a signature of Morgan’s style — in his honor.
Funeral arrangements are being planned.
