Midway Congregational United Church of Christ on historic Dorchester Academy’s campus is celebrating another anniversary.
This year marks the church’s 141st anniversary. A recommitment service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the church.
“The service will consist of prayers, songs and hymns. People will be given the opportunity to recommit themselves to the family of faith ministry,” Pastor Dr. Larry Evans said.
Also that day, the church’s 141st anniversary service will be held at 11 a.m.  The anniversary theme is “Celebrating the Past — Moving Forward.” The speaker for the occasion is Sandra Powell-Simmons. A native of Liberty County and former member of Midway Congregational, Powell-Simmons works for the Regional VA Medical Center in Coatsville, Pa.
Evans said several other things are happening at Midway Congregational. When he came to the church, he started the Midway Community Wellness and Family Enrichment Center. The center, which has the theme “Wholeness of Life,” provides pastoral care and individual counseling for people with mental issues, severe brain problems and substance-abuse issues. Help also is available for those dealing with couple and family issues, sexual abuse, spousal abuse and violence in the home. The church provides life-skills training, workshops and life-transitions support. Evans also is working on a program that uses hypnotherapy for weight control and diet maintenance.
“In February of last year, the center became the Midway Community Wellness and Family Enrichment Center, Fraser Center East. We are in partnership with the Fraser Counseling Center in Hinesville,” Evans said.
Evans is certified with three national professional associations: a designated supervisor and clinical member in the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, a diplomat with the American Association of Pastoral Counselors and a certified clinical hypnotherapist. He also is a certified pastoral psychotherapist.
“I also chair the American Association of Pastoral Counseling. We are advocating for uninsured and under-insured people to have access to community health care, both physical and mental,” he said.
Even with the travels, Evans’ wife, Dot, said she feels right at home.
“It is refreshing to be back in the South,” she said. “We live in Savannah, and it reminds me of New Orleans. The people at Midway Congregational Church are so warm and welcoming, and I am looking forward to hearing Sandra speak for the anniversary.”
Evans said she is working with the historical committee at the church, and they hope to have a display for the church anniversary.
