Chemical spill found in Ludowici

POSTED: January 21, 2013 1:25 p.m.

A chemical spill was detected at the intersection of Highways 84 and 301 in Ludowici at around 11 a.m. Monday. According to Ludowici-Long County Fire Department Chief Richard Truman, the origin of the spill, which stretched 200 feet down Highway 84, is unknown. First responders identified the substance as “black liquor,” a chemical typically used at paper mills. It is a respiratory hazard, but is not as flammable as first responders initially thought.

Truman said the spill has been contained and the scene is under control. Chemtrec and the Georgia Department of Transportation have been contacted and are en route to assist with the cleanup.

Highway 84 is open to eastbound traffic, but westbound lanes are still closed.

The Courier will provide updates as details emerge.
