Bradwell’s girls’ basketball team used a strong fourth-quarter showing from the free-throw line to push past Statesboro, 38-33, in a non-region contest Saturday at home.
The Bradwell boys fell to Statesboro, 80-53.
In the girls’ game, both teams played strong defense, keeping the game close. However, the Lady Tigers hit 9 of 13 free throws in the fourth quarter Saturday to get the win. Shaquoia Crockett sunk five of her six free-throw attempts in the final period en route to a team-high 17 points. Leitia Leiataua hit three of four charity shots down the stretch as she scored nine points on the night.
Going into Tuesday’s action, the Lady Tigers were 10-11 overall and held a 9-1 Region 3B-AAAAA record.
In the boys’ contest, the Blue Devils’ win came from a series of turnovers, their impressive speed and Zaquavian Smith’s strong all-around offensive showing.
He lit up the scoreboard, hitting 23 points, including five 3-pointers, an alley-oop and two slam dunks in a crowd-pleasing display.
Statesboro had a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Blue Devils outscored the Tigers, 26-7, in the second quarter to earn a lead the Tigers couldn’t chip away at.
Malcolm Dingle paced the Tigers with 19 points. The Tigers’ Miguel Pineda hit four 3-pointers en route to 14 points.
The Tigers went into Tuesday 11-10 overall and 7-3 in the region.
The Bradwell squads were to face Jenkins on Tuesday. Scores were unavailable by press time.
On Friday, Bradwell’s teams host Richmond Hill in Region 3-AAAAA matchups.
The girls’ game starts at 7 p.m., with the boys’ game to follow.
