Bradwell Institute’s basketball teams finished the regular season by sweeping Groves High School in Garden City Friday night.
The girls had to hold off a huge rally from the Lady Rebels to win 53-46. The boys had a close game as well, but held on to win 66-60.
In the girls’ contest, BI jumped out to a 23-7  lead.  However the Lady Rebels weren’t about to give up and in the second half the Rebel girls chipped away at the lead and came within two points.
“In the second half we were not taking care of the ball offensively the way we did in the first half,” Lady Tigers coach Faye Baker said. “In the first half we played team ball…and to give credit to Groves they just played a much better second half and they made it a game. In the fourth quarter we had to play hard to win that game.”
Baker said she heard about Tuesday’s game between Groves and Jenkins. In that contest the Lady Warriors led by 11 going into the second half and Groves ended up winning by two.
“So I knew that this game was not going to be easy and I think our kids, once we got that early lead, we got a little complacent,” Baker added. “We got a little relaxed with the basketball and allowed them to come back.”
But with the fourth quarter push and win the Lady Tigers finished the regular season with a 13-12 overall mark and 12-2 Region 3B-AAAAA record. That means the Lady Tigers finished in a first place tie with Effingham County in the region.
On Saturday the coaching staff of both schools met for the official coin toss that would decide who would hold the No. 1 seed going into the region playoffs next Wednesday. The region tournament will be held at Effingham County High School.
Results of the coin toss were not available, but if the Lady Tigers won they will play at 6:30 p.m. against Windsor Forest. If the Lady Tigers lose the coin toss, they  play Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and once again face Groves.
The boys finished the regular season with a 13-12 overall record and 9-5 region mark after beating Groves 66-60 Friday.
That means the Tiger boys finished third in the region and will face Windsor Forest at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
