There was a bit of a downpour last Saturday, but that didn’t stop the Hinesville Hurricanes from giving local football fans a chance to enjoy some springtime action at Cottrell Field on Fort Stewart.
The Hurricanes won in a mudfight over the Glynn Revolution, 10-6, in their preseason scrimmage.
“The Revolution is a very good team and have been to three championship tournaments,” Hurricanes head coach James Sharp said. “I have the utmost respect for that team so being able to play all four quarters against them, and winning is a good thing for us as we launch the season.”
Playing in the United Spring Football League, the Hurricanes are entering their 14th season.
Sharp said this year they think they will have a stronger team after combining forces with their former opponent the Tri-County Panthers. He said his long-time friend and partner, Michael “Ice” Jones, will run the offense this season. Panthers head coach Steven Singleton will run the defense.
“Coach Jones and Singleton did an outstanding job on Saturday against the Revolution,” Sharp said. “They know what needs to be done as we prepare for our first regular-season game against the (South Carolina) Commanders.”
That game will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Long Bell Stadium in Hinesville. Admission is $5 for adults, while children ages 12 and younger are admitted free. Long County High School’s Blue Tide Marching Band will play at the games.
Coach Sharp said the visitors from Walterboro, S.C., will give the ’Canes a tough match.
In other Hurricanes news, several players were scheduled to participate in Smiley Elementary’s Read Across America program Wednesday in Ludowici.
