Though the Long County basketball team lost a heart-breaker 1-0 to the Tattnall County in Reidsville Thursday, coach Brian Thomas was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We played really good defense…” Thomas said. “It was led by Cody Fleck on the mound. He threw strikes all night and forced Tattnall’s hitters to hit his pitches. (Also) Chase Rogers had a great night at third, knocking down a couple of good shots by Tattnall’s hitters.”
Despite picking up the loss, starting pitcher Fleck had a good outing, going the distance and allowing only one unearned run. He allowed four hits and two walks and struck out eight batters.
Thomas also praised his opponents.
“Their pitching was very good (and) they were able to keep our hitters off balance. We tip our caps to those guys… They are a class bunch and a good baseball team. This was a great opportunity for us to match up with an AAA school with quality players and coaches,” the coach said.
After Thursday’s game, both the Blue Tide and the Battle Creek Warriors hold 2-1 records. Long County faced Bradwell Institute (1-0) in Ludowici on Saturday in a rescheduled contest that had been postponed by rain. The two teams will play again at 6 p.m. Monday in Hinesville.
