Semi-professional football kicked into action Saturday as the Hinesville Hurricanes hosted the South Carolina Commanders and shut out the visitors 26-0.
As the temperatures hovered near freezing the players began to heat up and on the ’Canes second offensive drive quarterback Tony Blocker led the ’Canes on a 76-yard drive. Hurricane Adrian Smith rushed in for a 2-yard touchdown and Larry Albert made the 2-point conversion.
Later in the evening the ’Canes shuffled their players around and quarterback Bryan Bess led the offense on another scoring drive that led in a 20-yard rushing touchdown by Joe Matavao.
Matavao, Chuck Crossley, Albert, Smith, Bess, Chauncey Crossley and Ronald Joseph all had touchdowns for the Hurricanes. Defensive captain Jamie Sharp intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and Chauncey Crossley also had an interception in the game.
The Hurricanes will host the Greyhounds at 7 p.m. Saturday at Long Bell Stadium. The game will be dedicated to the late Mary Jo Sharp.
Admission for children 12 and younger is free. Adult admission is $5.
