The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of an unidentified man found floating in a pond on Fort Stewart early Thursday evening, Fort Stewart Public Affairs spokesman Kevin Larson said Tuesday.
The man, who has been described only as a white male, was discovered in water near the Taylor's Creek training area off Highway 119, several miles outside of Pembroke.
Liberty County Coroner Reginald Pierce received a phone call from the medical examiner at Winn Army Community Hospital about the discovery of the body, which he said was found by a couple fishing in the area.
The coroner said he was told the man was a dependent of a soldier, but installation officials have not confirmed such a relationship or whether the victim lived on the base.
Details about what may have caused the man's death have not been made public and Larson said the post's Criminal Investigation Division is aiding the FBI in its investigation.
Calls to the FBI's Atlanta field office and Savannah regional office for more information on the case were not returned.
