FBI: Man in pond was shot

POSTED: February 21, 2008 5:00 a.m.
FBI officials confirmed Thursday the death of an unidentified man found on Fort Stewart a week ago is being investigated as a homicide.
FBI Supervisory Special Agent Bill Kirkconnell said autopsy results revealed the man was a victim of a gunshot wound, but the agency is not releasing further details about the circumstances surrounding the death. The victim's name "will not be made public until his identity has been forensically confirmed."
The man's body was found on Jan. 24 floating in a pond on the base near the Taylor's Creek training area off Highway 119, several miles outside Pembroke.
Citizens fishing in the area were the first to discover the victim, who has only been described as a white male, Kirkconnell said.
Liberty County Coroner Reginald Pierce said he was told the male may have been the dependent of a soldier, but neither Fort Stewart nor FBI officials have confirmed such a link.
It is also unclear whether the victim lived on the installation.
Kirkconnell said anyone with information on the case should call the FBI's Savannah regional office at 912-944-0700.
