The Long County High School baseball team Wednesday picked up its eighth victory of the year, defeating New Hampstead High School in Savannah. The Blue Tide grounded the Phoenix team in a one-sided thumping, 15-0, to improve their overall record to 8-5; their 2-AA Region mark remains at 3-3.
Pitcher Luke Golden got the start, notching a win and picking up the shutout. Leading the way behind the plate for Long County was John Christianson, who went 2 for 3 with three RBIs; Cole Ray, who went 1 for 2 with a double and three RBIs; and Jacob Turner, who went 2 for 4.
Blue Tide head coach Brian Thomas was all smiles after the game and had nothing but good things to say about his team’s perfor-mance.
“It was good for us to come out and hit the ball well. I was proud of our guys for being ready to play,” he said.
On Friday, the Blue Tide hit the road again, traveling to Pembroke to take on the Redskins, who brought a 6-4 overall record into the game and a 3-2 region mark. Long County defeated Bryan County, 13-9.
On Saturday, Long County faced Toombs County in Ludowici. The Bulldogs went into that game with an impressive 8-3 overall record and they were 5-2 in 2-AA. Results from the matchup will be in Wednesday’s paper.
This Tuesday, the Tide has another 2-AA contest at home against Atkinson County. The Rebels bring a 7-5 overall record into the game and a 2-4 region mark. On paper, Long County appears to have an advantage on the pitcher’s mound; the Tide has been allowing three runs a game compared to Atkinson County’s six runs. On the offensive side, however, the teams are more closely matched. The Blue Tide average eight runs a night compared to the Rebels’ seven. The game in Ludowici starts at 6 p.m.
