Long County High School’s baseball team picked up another victory Saturday by defeating Toombs County, 9-7, in Ludowici to extend its win streak to four.
Things didn’t look good for the Blue Tide early as they found themselves down, 4-0.  But in the fifth inning, the Blue Tide fought back to narrow the gap to 4-3 and loaded the bases with Shawn Mills at the plate.  Mills ripped a triple to centerfield, driving in three more runs to give his team the lead, 6-4. The Blue Tide added one more run in the inning and led, 7-4, after five innings.
But the Bulldogs fought back. By the seventh inning, they had tied the game at 7. In the top of the seventh, the Blue Tide put two men in scoring position with Tristan Goodro at the plate. Goodro hit a triple to score both runners and seal the win.
Long County starting pitcher John Christianson was relieved in the sixth inning by Luke Golden, who closed out the game with hitless relief and picked up the win.
Mills was the leading hitter in the contest, posting four RBIs.
“I was very proud of our performance on Saturday. We got behind 4-0 early but never gave in. (The biggest reason for our four-game win streak is) hard work at practice and our willingness to get better each day,” Blue Tide head coach Brian Thomas said.  As of Monday, the Blue Tide’s overall record was 10-5 and their Region 2-AA mark was 5-3, which put them in the third spot in the region standings behind Benedictine Military School (7-1 in the region and 12-2 overall) and Jeff Davis County (5-2 in region and 8-4 overall).
On Tuesday, the Tide had another big region game facing Atkinson County.  Results from that game will be in this Friday’s paper.
On Friday, Long County will be back on the diamond by hosting McIntosh County, who had yet to win a game this season as of Monday.  The Blue Tide have dominated the series recently, having won the past three games and six of the last seven. The game begins at 6 p.m.
