Despite having a large group of young baseball players cheering it on from the home stands during Recreation Department Night, Long County High School couldn’t end a losing streak Tuesday against Bacon County.
The Blue Tide held a 3-2 lead at the end of four innings, but they couldn’t close out the game as the Red Raiders put up two runs late to steal the game, 4-3.
The loss was the fourth straight for Long County and dropped the Tide to 12-9 overall and 7-7 in Region 2-AA, while Bacon County improved to 7-13 and 6-8, respectively. The defeat was big for the Blue Tide as it dropped them out of the fourth spot in the region standings, down to No. 5 and a half-game behind Metter, which sits at 7-6 in the region and 9-10 overall.
“We’ve been pretty unlucky in the last couple of games,” Blue Tide head coach Brian Thomas said. “We have hit the ball hard, but right at the defense on several occasions … we are telling our guys to keep working hard at practice, don’t panic and continue to play hard.”
Luke Golden and Cody Fleck who each went 2 for 3 against Bacon County. Chase Rogers was 1 for 2 with two RBIs, and Shawn Mills who was 1 for 3.
Golden took the loss for the Blue Tide.
This weekend’s games, both of which are on the road, are critical for Long County as the Blue Tide take on Toombs County today and Metter on Saturday. As of Thursday, Toombs had a 9-4 region mark (13-5 overall) and was in second place in the region. When the Tide faced the Bulldogs last month, they were able to pull out the win in a 9-7 shootout.
Today’s game starts at 5:45 p.m.  in Lyons, and Saturday’s game starts at 1 p.m. in Metter.
