South Georgia Kings win first tournament of season

The eighth-grade South Georgia Kings won the Icebreaker Tournament, held April 5-7 in Augusta. The tournament was the Kings’ first this season.

Getting the AAU basketball season off to a solid start, the eighth-grade South Georgia Kings won the Icebreaker Tournament, held April 5-7 in Augusta. The tournament was the Kings’ first this season.
Coached by Shane Smith and Richard LeCounte Sr., the team went 5-0 to win the championship trophy.
Smith said the Kings began with a 92-42 victory over Aiken Elite. Davion Mitchell led all scorers with 20 points. Zion Williams had 13, Richard Lecounte 12, Justin Garcia 11, Darrell Johnson 9, Reiken Donaldson 9, Tracy White 8, Tyreon Freeman 7 and Traveon Freeman 3.
In game two, the SGK beat the Aiken Warriors, 88-41. Again, Mitchell paced the squad with 18 points. Lecounte had 15, Garcia 15, Freeman 12, White 12, Williams 8, Donaldson 4 and Freeman 4.
In game three, the local boys beat out Team GLA, 83-63. Topping the points was Mitchell with 27. Williams had 18, Lecounte 12, White 10, Darrell Johnson 8, and Freeman and Garcia chipped in 3 points each.
After pool play, the boys wound up in the semi-final, where they played the Georgia Fury. Smith said the game presented the boys with their biggest challenge in the tournament, but the Kings eked out a 75-71 win.
Lecounte led the Kings in scoring with 23 points. White had 18, Mitchell 17, Williams 13, Freeman 4 and Johnson 3.
In the championship game, the Kings faced the Tucker Running Rebels and came out on top, 71-49. Lecounte and Mitchell had 21 points each. Williams had 11, Donaldson had 4, and Garcia had 2.
“This was a great way to kick off our AAU season coming off last year’s national championship,” Smith said.
The Kings are scheduled to play this weekend at the King James Southern Exposure Tournament in Augusta.
