Sports-minded people will have a lot of outdoors opportunities Saturday with a free baseball clinic and a fishing tournament in Long County.
The second annual Fishin’ for a Cure is set to start at daybreak for Nobles Cabin on the Altamaha River. Proceeds from the event, which is sponsored by the Long County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance Unit of the Department of Public Safety, go to help needy children in the area. This year, students Allison Foster, Emma Goober, and Micah Smiley will benefit from the event. Weigh-in will take place at 6 p.m.
Cash prizes of $500, $300 and $150 will be awarded for the top three heaviest pan-fish stringers caught. In addition, prizes of fishing equipment will be given out to children younger than 13.
“I really am encouraging everyone to come out and help support us,” Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles said. “We will be providing a meal, and I know everyone will have a good time.” To register, directions or other information, go to www.fishinforacure.com.
Also on Saturday, the Long County Recreation Department will host a clinic for baseball and softball players between the ages of 9-14 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at 59 Rec Park Road in Ludowici.
The clinic will focus on the fundamentals of hitting, fielding, throwing and base-running. Instruction will be given by former Long County High School coach Albert Lodge. As the coach of the Blue Tide, Lodge took his team to the playoffs every year, won the region title in 2002 and advanced to the Elite 8 in 2003.  Prior to being at LCHS, Lodge was the coach at Bryan County, where his teams won three state titles and eight region championships.
Cost is $10. Application forms can be picked up at the Long County Recreation Complex. The last day to register is Thursday.
