The Long County Blue Tide baseball team on Wednesday broke a five-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over Toombs County in Lyons.
The victory helped to wipe away some of the bad taste of a 10-6 Region 2-AA loss Tuesday to Bryan County in Ludowici. The split put the Blue Tide at 8-8 in Region 2-AA and in a battle for the final playoff spot.
Statistics from Wednesday’s game were not available at press time.
On Tuesday, the Redskins held a one-run lead through six innings but put up three runs in the top of the seventh to secure the region win.
The game looked like it was going to be a pitching duel early, as starting pitchers Chase Rogers of Long County and Nathan Legget of Bryan County pitched hitless and scoreless first innings. But in the second inning, Rogers allowed four hits and three runs. Blue Tide head coach Brian Thomas pulled Rogers and inserted Shawn Mills, who managed to slow down the Redskin batters. However, after 2 ½ innings, the visitors led, 6-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Tide fought back by scoring five runs to make it 6-5. In the top of the fifth inning, Bryan County loaded the bases with one out. Thomas pulled Mills from the mound and inserted Luke Golden. Golden limited the damage as the Redskins got only one run. In the bottom of the sixth, the Blue Tide’s Shane Deloach cracked a single and stole second. Mills slammed a hard hit down the third-base line for a double, sending Deloach in to make it a 7-6 game.
With two outs and runners at first and second in the top of the fifth, a Bryan County batter nailed a deep ball to right field. Turner ran to make the play but missed the ball, resulting in the two base runners scoring.
The Redskins added another run in the inning.
Turner was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Mills was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a double, and Deloach went 1 for 3 with two runs scored.
Legget picked up the win, while Rogers got the loss.
“I thought we answered them well in the fourth inning with five runs after spotting them six in the second inning, but after that we just could not pull even or ahead of them,” Thomas said.
With the Blue Tide fighting for a playoff spot, the loss was huge for them. Three teams in the region have secured playoff spots: Benedictine Military School, Toombs County and Jeff Davis.
However, there is a battle for the fourth and final spot, with four schools at or near .500 region records.
The Blue Tide was scheduled to host Metter on Thursday. Results were unavailable at press time.
Today, Long County travels to Pearson to take on Atkinson County at 6 p.m.
Results from those games will be in Sunday’s Coastal Courier.
