Anglers of all ages came out April 27 to participate in the second annual Fishin’ for a Cure tournament at the Altamaha River in Long County.
The event is put on by the Long County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division to raise money for children who have some a disability or illness.  This year’s recipients were Micah Smiley, Allison Foster and Emma Goober, who each received $10,000.
Fish that could be considered in the tournament were panfish stringers including bluegill, redbreast, crappie, shell cracker and red-ear sunfish.  The two-person teams started finding their spots on the river just before sunrise, and the weigh-in was held at 6 p.m. at Nobles Cabin.  This year, the team of Duck and Red DeLoach took home the top prize of $500 with a catch weighing 13.1 pounds.  The runner-up team was Ronnie and Keith DeLoach with a catch of 11.84 pounds to win $300, and the third-place team of Irbie and Charles Moody had a catch of 9.74 pounds to win $150.
Each team received their check at the weigh-in, but all of them declined their winnings and gave the money back to the tournament to be divided equally among the three children.
The tournament also had a kids division, with the top three children receiving fishing tackle.
First place went to Preston Lowen, second place to Calysta DeLoach, third place to Tanner DeLoach and fourth place went to Cameron DeLoach.  Mary DeLoach, Chase DeLoach, Caden Driggers and Alake Driggers also participated in the kid’s tournament.
