The Liberty County School System was Georgia’s sole presenter during the National School Boards Association conference in San Diego.
A group of administrators including Superintendent Dr. Judy Scherer and Dr. Patti Crane, executive director of technology and media, presented April 15 about “Georgia Innovators: Blazing a Trail with Digital Content.”
“We just shared what was going on in our district, the successes and the challenges, what we use in our programs and logistically how we’ve made it work,” Crane said. “You know, how it’s working, what we’ve learned from it.”
As the Courier previously reported, the district is considered a regional model for its digital initiatives, which include using a three-year Department of Defense Educational Activity grant to place iPads in middle-school math and science classrooms.
Three high-school classes this year began working with teacher-created digital course materials, and several devices have been placed in elementary classes to explore teaching and learning possibilities.
Crane said there were about 40 people in the audience, as the presentation was one of several simultaneous sessions. Board members, superintendents, principals, district administrators and technology directors were in attendance.
The group also gathered ideas from other district presentations.
Crane said they landed a presenter spot at the conference after the district submitted a proposal to the NSBA.
“That was very exciting,” she said. “We were really honored to be able to have that opportunity, and we’ve had a couple systems follow up and ask questions since we’ve gotten back, too, about what we’re doing and can they come see us.”
