Editors note: Throughout the summer, the Courier’s sports section will highlight fun family activities that are in Liberty County or a short drive away. This week, we will feature three ways to travel around St. Simons Island — on scooters, in golf carts or by pedal power. First up is Your Moped Operandi.

School’s out for the summer, but that doesn’t have to mean boredom sets in. Finding fun, affordable, family friendly activities isn’t hard given the coastal destinations in Liberty County or a short drive away.

St. Simons Island offers miles of sandy beaches, a fishing pier, a children’s park right by the ocean, plenty of tasty eateries, lots of local history and now, three different ways to see it all — by scooter, golf cart or pedal power.

Your Moped Operandi, which held its grand opening last Friday, is owned and operated by Bridgette and Christopher Redd and their longtime friend, Derrick Cody. Their new business is the first on the island to offer scooter rentals, and the three owners said they’re excited to share their family tradition of riding scooters with their children.

"We have a family that has a weekly rental right now and they are towing their 4-year old son, which is so cute," Bridgette Redd said, adding all their scooters are two-seaters. "Our youngest daughter is 6 and she loves riding in the back seat. It is family fun for everyone."

Redd said they wanted to provide a different method of transportation for people looking to explore the island. Starting a new business is hard, she said, but, in the long run, it is something she and her husband would like to hand down to their children.

"We wanted something we could hold longevity in and stay here, plant our roots and stay grounded for a while … something that hopefully my husband and I can hand down to our kids," she said. "We want Your Moped Operandi and scooter rentals to become synonymous with SSI."

Christopher Redd said they searched for the right spot to house their facility and were fortunate to find an available kiosk at the Village Pier Marketplace — a stone’s throw from SSI’s most visited location.

"This is a great location on the island right by the water, the pier and the park," he said.

Located at the intersection of Beachview Drive and Mallery Street, Your Moped Operandi offers hourly, daily and weekly rates.

Cody said the summer is their peak season.

"We will be open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Sunday and during the off season we are looking to stay open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.," he said. "Our rate starts at the minimum two hour rental fee of $65; four hours is $110; $150 for all day rentals or $300 a week."

Christopher Redd said all the scooters are 49.5cc which means anyone holding a permit can legally drive one, according to Georgia state law. However he said they can’t be operated on any highway or any road where there is a posted minimum speed.

"Our rental requirements are that you must be 18 and hold a driver’s license to rent one," he said. "It is up to their parents if they wish to let their kids operate one but they must have a permit. "Helmets and eye protection are also required and every one of our helmets comes with shields for the eyes."

Cody said they have 25 scooters available for rental at the moment but should the need arise they have access to order more. He added they can also facilitate the sale of a scooter to anyone who wants to purchase one.

Bridgette Redd said they offer guided history tours and can organize a customized scavenger hunt. Working with local restaurants, vendors and locations Redd said they will design the hunt based on information provided by the customer whether it be a romantic and fun way to propose marriage for a party of two or challenge the brains of your friends and family with your favorite trivial pursuit.

"It was one of our family traditions," Redd said adding they would like to see return visitors establish scooter traditions as well. You give us the information and we will design the scavenger hunt. We want to stress that we are family owned and operated. We are here and take safety first in addition to fun. For the people coming in from out of town we want them to be able to establish a tradition of coming down and renting scooters and establishing those long lasting relationships. And we want to give back to our community as well as offer a fun and entertaining attraction."

"I’ve lived here all my life and we want people to know that we are not one of those scooter rental businesses that came here for one season and then you don’t see them anymore," he said. "We are here to stay."

If riding a scooter is not your speed then next best thing might be riding in style in a gas powered or electric powered golf cart. Pick up Wednesday’s Coastal Courier and read about Your Moped Operandi’s next door neighbor and long-time business establishment High Tide Carts.
