Heavily recruited Liberty County High School linebacker Raekwon McMillan has moved up ESPN’s rankings of top high-school football players.
At the same time, one school may be moving up his list of possible destinations for college football.
According to ESPN.com’s Tom Luginbill on Monday, the rising senior has moved up to No. 13 on the ESPN 150 for the class of 2014 and earned a fifth star in the website’s five-star recruit grading. Luginbill wrote that McMillan’s move up was due to “competitive character and intangibles as it is anything else.”
“His conduct, production, personality and leadership skills lend to a minimized bust factor,” Luginbill added. “Add in the ability level and there is a high probability for success.”
Also, the Gainesville Sun reported Sunday that McMillan made a surprise trip Saturday to the University of Florida. McMillan told the paper that his top five schools, in no order, are Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia and Ohio State. Last October, he declared Ohio State the leader.
In the Sun article, McMillan praised the UF campus and staff. He also said he liked current Gators linebackers Antonio Morrison and Michael Taylor.
“That’s my guy, man,” McMillan said of Morrison. “Last time I visited, I chilled with him and Mike (Taylor). They’re real cool guys, and I could see myself playing here because those are the type of guys I like playing beside.”
McMillan said he met with Gators head coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin about his potential role in the UF defense and filling the middle-linebacker spot vacated by Jon Bostic, who was selected in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
McMillan plans to be back at UF this Saturday, the paper reported, which will be his fourth trip to Gainesville. He also told the Sun he would like to attend the Gators’ home game against Florida State on Nov. 30.
He plans to make his decision in December.
