Liberty County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Keith Moran said family members have identified the man who drowned after a police chase in Flemington last Friday as Jermaine Elkins of Claxton.
As reported earlier this week a LCSO deputy stopped a driver suspected of driving under the influence on Highway 84 in Flemington, near the Holiday Inn Express shortly after 3 a.m.
When the deputy approached the car Elkins bolted from the vehicle and ran into some nearby woods.
With the deputy in chase Elkins reportedly fell into a pond. Despite attempts by the deputy to pull Elkins to safety, he disappeared under the water.
A dive team composed of members of the Hinesville Fire and Police departments arrived and eventually found the man’s body about 12 feet out from the edge of the pond.
Moran said no drugs or alcohol were found in the vehicle.
