There have been plenty of softball championships to celebrate lately in Liberty County.
Two weeks ago, the Liberty County Recreation Department’s senior all-stars softball team shut out Wayne County to earn the Georgia Recreation Parks Association District Two title. On Wednesday, the junior girls followed suit, beating Douglas for their district title as well.
The GRPA District Two games were played at Liberty County High School.
Two weeks ago, the seniors swept Wayne County in a best-of-three series, winning the championship against the Yellow Jackets, 19-0, June 11, according to coach Christina Anthony.
The seniors advanced to the state tournament June 18-21 but were eliminated after going 1-2. The senior girls were coached by Christina and Joseph Anthony.
On Tuesday, the junior district tournament got off to a tough start, being interrupted several times for rain and lightning. The tournament continued Wednesday, when the Liberty girls took the field against Glynn in their semifinal game.
Liberty ran up a 12-0 lead in the first inning en route to a 15-3 win in four innings. Kathryn Carter pitched three innings, keeping the Glynn batters at bay before Mackenzie Stewart came in to close. The visiting team was kept off the scoreboard until the third inning but was shut down by Stewart in the fourth for the run-rule win.
In the final game, the girls thumped Douglas, 13-0, in four innings for the championship trophy. Carter pitched four perfect innings and struck out 10 of 12 batters. She also slammed a two-run homer in the third inning.
The junior girls are headed to the state tournament July 10-13 in Vidalia. The junior girls are coached by head coach Michael Smith, David Stewart and Marty Martin.
