The Long County High School football team on Friday held its first inter-squad scrimmage of the year, giving the Blue Tide coaching staff a chance to look at all of their players and examine them at game-time speed.
Head coach Ron Flott said that both sides of the ball looked good at times, but he did see where they still have a lot of work to do before the first game of the season.
“At times, our offense looked pretty good, and then at other times, they didn’t look so good,” he said. “We got a lot of young kids out there, so there is still a lot that we have to work on.”
The coach said that the defense looked a little better than the offense, but added that at this time of the year, that is to be expected.
“Our defense was about like our offense — they looked good at times and then at other times not so good. They did look a little bit better (than the offense), but then again on defense you can just strap it up and hit somebody, and most of the time you’ll be OK,” Flott said.
He said that he is looking forward to the team’s scrimmage this Friday against Montgomery in Mount Vernon because that will tell him a little more about some of his players.
“We got some players that have never been on a football field, so we want to look at those that have played for us and also these kids that haven’t played and see what we got,” he said.
Last season, Montgomery was winless in Region 3B-A.
The game begins at 7:30 p.m.
