Army's 'American Idol' next month

Weekly FMWR briefing for Aug. 26-Sept. 1

Singers from Stewart and Hunter are invited to compete in Operation Rising Star, the Army’s version of “American Idol.”

Register at Stewart Recreation Office, suite 125, or at the Hunter Leisure Travel Office.There is no charge. The competition is open to active duty, National Guard or Reserve from any branch of service, and family members who are at least 18.

Round 1 will be at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at Rocky’s Warrior Zone. For more information, call 767-4316 on Stewart or 315-3674 at Hunter.

 

Golf 4 Life

A “Golf 4 Life” clinic will be from 9-10 a.m. Aug. 31 at Hunter Golf Course.  

It is one in a series of free clinics that include an  introduction and a new topic each time. Beginners can learn the basics, while novice golfers improve their game.

New hours at library      

Fort Stewart's George P. Hays Library is changing its days and hours. Effective Sept. 2: closed on Fridays and Sundays; open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays; open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursdays; and open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, call 767-2828.

 

‘Get Fit … ' boot camp

September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and Youth Sports is offering a way to stay trim and fit.

It’s “Get Fit … Be Strong” Boot Camp is every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. starting Sept. 3 at the baseball complex at the corner of Hero and Coe avenues.

There’s no charge for CYSS-registered youth (ages 11-17). Parents/guardians are encouraged to participate. The program will continue until Sept. 26.

Run for Resiliency

Registration is under way for the Top of the Rock 5K and 10K Run for Resiliency 8 a.m. Sept. 7.

Trophieswill be awarded to the top 5k and 10k male and female finishers, the top two in each of 10 age categories and the top two teams. All participants will get T-shirts.

Registration costs $20 now and $25 on the day of the race, which is open to all DoD cardholders. Team pre-registration ends Sept. 4 and individual pre-registration ends Sept. 5. Sign up at Stewart Sports Office or Hunter’s Tominac Fitness Center.

Bridal showcase

A Bridal Showcase will be from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in the Club Stewart Ballroom.

A variety of businesses and wedding experts will be there. Attendees will get gift bags and show passport that could win a $500 wedding reception certificate. Admission will be $10 per person for active duty and $13 for others. The showcase is open to the public.

Car wash

Soldier Show

The U.S. Army Soldier Show, a 75-minute song-and-dance production by active duty, Army Reserve and Army National Guard soldiers, will be presented at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 and 8 at Newman Fitness Center.

Stewart's SPC Millie Sneed is a featured vocalist.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. It is free and the public is welcome.

 

Weightlifting contest

The Rock Powerlifting and Bench Press Competition will be Sept. 14 at 4th IBCT Fitness Center, with weigh-in at 8:30 a.m., briefing at 9:30 and competition at 10:15.

Awards will be presented to top lifters in various weight classes, using the Schwartz-Malone Power Lifting formula.

Early registration, until Aug. 30, costs is $10. Late it is $15. Sign up at 4th IBCT or Newman Fitness Center.

Vineyard trip

You’ve got a chance to stomp grapes, then taste the fruits of your labor during the Leisure Travel Office trip to the Meinhardt Vineyards and Winery near Statesboro on Sept. 14. The trip begins at 11 a.m.

Registration continues until Sept. 7. The cost is $25. Dinner, at a restaurant, will be at participants’ expense.

Bass tournament

Early bird registration is under way for a Bass Tournament scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at Metz Pond.

The fee until Aug. 31 is $20 for soldiers, retirees, their family members, and all youth (15 and younger). The early bird fee for civilians is $35. The fees increase by $5 from Sept. 1-27 and by $10 on day of the event.

Strongman, strongwoman

Find out if you are the strongest man or woman on Fort Stewart/Hunter during the Rock Strongman and Strongwoman Competition.

It will start at 4 p.m. Sept. 26 at 4th IBCT Fitness Center. Register by Sept. 20.

Events include deadlifts, one-arm dumbbell press, tire flip, sled pull and keg toss/carry. Transportation to and from Hunter provided.

Kids fishing

Children, 15 and younger, can each catch up to five catfish (and maybe lifelong hobby as well) at the Kids Fishing Event from 7-10 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Hallstrom Lake Recreation Area on Hunter.

There’s no charge and no fishing license is required. Bring your fishing pole. Limited bait available.
