Former Lewis Frasier Middle School math teacher Roosevelt Tazewell was sentenced Monday to serve two years in prison and seven years of probation.
He also will be required to register as a sex offender.
Tazewell was charged with two counts of criminal attempt to commit a felony, one for indecent purposes and the other for child molestation, according to the Liberty County Clerk of Courts office.
The former teacher was arrested in December 2010 for having written numerous sexually inappropriate letters and sending messages via MySpace.com to a sixth-grader. The student’s parents found the handwritten notes in the girl’s locker, according to initial Hinesville Police reports.
A civil suit filed by the victim and her family against Tazewell and the Liberty County School System is pending in federal court. The suit claims that former LCSS Superintendent Dr. Judy Scherer, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Mary Alexander and then-LFMS Principal Tom Alexander, who is now director of the College and Career Academy, conspired to handle the incidents internally and failed to report them to authorities.
The educators said they notified authorities as soon as they knew of the allegations.
