July 31: Arson – second degree — A deputy was dispatched to John Wells Road in Hinesville after a vehicle caught fire. The complainant parked the car around 11:30 p.m. Later that night, his roommate heard people in the yard followed by a loud noise. He ran outside to find the car on fire. The complainant said the only person he could think of that would do this was his wife, with whom he recently separated.

• Possession of marijuana, no proof of insurance — A deputy was on patrol on E.G. Miles Parkway and ran a vehicle-registration check on a gray Nissan Altima. The check revealed that the owner had a suspended license, no valid insurance and a warrant out for his arrest.
The deputy made contact with the driver and smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver was arrested for driving on a suspended license and for the warrant, and two passengers were searched for illegal items. Only one passenger was found to have marijuana on him, and he also was arrested.

• Possession of controlled substance; headlight/tail light requirement — A Midway resident was stopped at 10:30 p.m. on Oak Creek Road by a LCSO deputy for pulling a trailer with his green Chevy pickup without tail lights on the trailer or plate lights on the truck. While the pickup was stopped, the deputy allowed his K9, Roxy, to conduct a “free-air sniff” of the vehicle’s exterior.
The dog’s behavior changed as she focused on the open driver’s window. The deputy found an open container of vodka and a pill bottle containing six pills that a field test later determined to be crack cocaine.
