The Long County High School softball team continued its winning ways by beating Toombs County, 6-0, Tuesday in a big Region 2-AA showdown of hot teams.
The Bulldogs went into the game riding a five-game win streak while the Lady Tide was on a three-game streak. Solid pitching and aggressive hitting carried Long County to the win.
Lady Tide head coach Brian Thomas praised his entire team and said his girls were gaining more confidence with every win.
“We are playing better as a team, and we are starting to believe that we can compete with some of the better teams in the region,” Thomas said.
Harley Dawson led the Lady Tide on the mound. She threw all seven innings, giving up two hits and allowing no walks while striking out three.
At the plate, Katie Estill, Brittany Smiley and Taylor Poole each went 2 for 4, and Samantha Garcia was 1 for 2 with three runs.
“Harley pitched a great game and Madalyne Flynn caught a great game,” Thomas said. “Ashley Desbiens also made several good defensive plays at shortstop.”
With the win, the Lady Tide improved their overall record to 7-8 and their region mark to 5-4.  The Lady Bulldogs fell to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in the region.
After beginning the season with a 3-8 record and the playoffs looking like a distant dream, Long County had fought its way back up to the fifth spot as of Wednesday, behind Jeff Davis, Bacon County, Toombs and Vidalia.
“This is a young team and it is great to see all of their hard work pay off,” LCHS Athletic Director Karen Swindell said.
The Lady Tide was scheduled to host St. Vincent’s Academy on Thursday in another region matchup. Results for that game were not available for this story.
At 6 p.m. Monday, Long County has another region contest when it hosts on McIntosh County.
The Lady Buccaneers had a 5-8 overall record and a 4-6 region mark as of Thursday.
