A Hinesville woman was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday night on West Oglethorpe Highway in Hinesville.
According to Hinesville Police Department Traffic Accident Investigator Cpl. Les Patton, the woman, identified as Yvonne Halbur, 58, reportedly was crossing West Oglethorpe Highway near Timberlane Circle from a westbound lane around 8:30 p.m. A 20-year-old man was traveling east in a 2003 Ford Mustang en route to meet his parents at a restaurant. The driver told police he glanced down at his speedometer and when he looked up, he suddenly saw Halbur step into the path of his vehicle. Patton said the driver tried to avoid hitting Halbur but was unable to stop his vehicle in time.
La-Dona Andrews, who had just picked up her daughter from her mother’s house, was not far behind the Mustang when the accident occurred. She noticed vehicles slowing down as she approached the accident scene and said she saw a woman lying in the street alone.
Andrews pulled her vehicle over into a safe location and ran back to Halbur to offer assistance. Andrews said Halbur appeared to be convulsing when she arrived, so Andrews kneeled down beside her and tried to reassure her. Emergency medical personnel arrived and immediately transported Halbur to Liberty Regional Medical Center in Hinesville while performing life-saving measures.
Patton said Halbur was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. from blunt-force trauma.
Halbur, who had no identification on her, later was identified by her husband, Richard Halbur, who went to investigate what was going on not far from his home. Richard Halbur told Patton that his wife frequently went for walks as a form of exercise, and she had left their home on Timberlane Circle earlier in the evening.
The case is under investigation, but according to Patton, speed and impairment don’t appear to be factors in the accident.
